Fifteen minutes after lunch supports wellness, focus, and relationships
HANNIBAL, Mo. Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, every Hannibal Middle School (HMS) student has a 15-minute recess built into the schedule immediately after lunch.
The story began last year in Advanced ELA, when then-HMS students, now HHS students, Lucy Biggs and Stevie Wilson presented an argumentative speech proposing lunch recess. Principal Stephanie Utterback listened, met with students to gather input, and worked with staff to bring the idea to life for all HMS students.
Now, each day at lunch, the campus comes alive. Students rotate through activities volleyball, gaga ball, pickleball, football, tetherball, basketball, or choose quiet time outdoors with friends. Staff members are out there too, supervising and joining the fun to strengthen connections beyond the classroom. School Resource Officer Wisdom is often playing alongside students and encouraging teamwork.
Why it matters
Time to be kids. Recess provides space to move, laugh, and socialize with age-appropriate activities.
Mind and body reset. Fresh air and exercise after lunch help students return to afternoon classes ready to learn.
Stronger relationships. Informal play builds positive connections with trusted adults.
The daily lunch recess aligns with Hannibal Middle School's focus on student wellness, engagement, and a positive school culture. It is a small scheduling change with a meaningful impact on how students feel and learn in the afternoon.
